The 28th Annual World Conference of the International Association of Ports and Harbors is coming to Los Angeles May 6-10, at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE.   The biennial World Ports Conference is attended by 400-500 high-level officials from IAPH’s member base of nearly 200 ports and port organizations spanning 90 countries. IAPH member ports handle more than 60 percent of the world's sea-borne trade and nearly 80 percent of the world’s containerized cargo.

New Businesses Get Help to Speed Startup

Moving to help California businesses get started and hire more quickly, Gov. Brown has signed AB 113 (Assembly Budget Committee), which directs additional funds to the Secretary of State’s Office to accelerate the state’s business filing process and eliminate a massive backlog of filings.  

“The sooner Californians can form their businesses, the sooner they can put other Californians to work,” said Governor Brown.

LA City Council OKs LAX Modernization/Runway Plan

It’s been years in the making, but the Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to approve a plan to rebuild and expand a runway at Los Angeles International Airport. The $4.76 billion project is intended to upgrade the airport’s layout to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A380.

The Council voted 10-3 to move forward on the proposal to demolish the North Runway at LAX and rebuild it 260 feet further north despite intense opposition from residents.

LA Clean Tech Initiative at CSUN

Don't miss the second annual California Renewable Energy and Storage Technology Conference being held at CSUN on May 4th. featuring a stellar panel of invited speakers culminating in a panel discussion with the LA Clean Tech Initiative - which is about to establish a satellite incubator at CSUN campus to promote research in renewable energy technologies.

The registration deadline for the conference has been extended until May 2nd ($ 30 for students and $100 for non-students).

New LA County Cleantech Portal

The LAEDC has launched a Cleantech Portal - an online site dedicated to everything "clean technology". The LAEDC Cleantech Cluster Project is one of the nation's first efforts to examine the current and potential future state of clean technology in a local economy.

 

Supervisors OK NBCUniversal Development

After a bumpy 17-year process that once proposed developing thousands of homes on its famous Hollywood back lot, NBCUniversal won unanimous approval from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for a plan that lets it expand its Universal Studios theme park.

In an op-ed published last week in the Long Beach Press-Telegram, David Fleming, founding chair of the Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed) wrote, "two environmental reports concluded that the project actually results in air quality improvements and reductions in associated health risks for surrounding communities, particularly for nearby residents...this arguing and dissension has paralyzed California and the region long enough.
