LA City Proposes New Business "Tax Holiday"

Seeking to boost job creation, LA City officials are proposing a three-year "tax holiday" for new business startups in a move that a USC analysis suggests could create 55,000 jobs. The exemption would apply to any new business beginning operations in the city within the next three fiscal years (through 2012).

 

In a step forward for public pension reform and reining in rising costs, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday announced tentative contract agreements with four state employee unions – representing 23,000 workers. The agreements roll back the expansion of pension benefits adopted in SB 400 in 1999 and will move pension contributions for all employees in the four unions to a minimum of 10 percent, among the highest employee contribution levels in the nation.

LA City to Launch Office of Economic Analysis

There is great news out of LA City government: Council President Eric Garcetti has agreed to fund $250,000 for an Office of Economic Analysis that the business community has rallied strongly for since late last year. Gary Toebben updated BizFed’s Advocacy Committee on the OEA last week.

Goldman Sachs announced today that it is launching the greater Los Angeles 10,000 Small Business Initiative - with $20 million in small business loans to be provided through local Community Development Financial Institutions, including Valley Economic Development Center. Business Education Partners to include Los Angeles Community College District, Long Beach Community College District.

Voter-approved Redistricting Efforts Underway

Efforts to institute the new redistricting process approved by voters with the passage of Proposition 11 (the Voters First Act) in the November 2008 general election continues to move forward with this summer’s review of applicants for the new Citizens Redistricting Commission. Under Prop. 11, responsibility for redrawing the legislative and Board of Equalization district lines was transferred from the Legislature to the people in the form of a new 14-member Commission.
 

Two BizFed Members Honored by CalChamber

The California Chamber of Commerce recently recognized 22 local chambers of commerce with the President’s Circle award - including BizFed members Culver City Chamber of Commerce and Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.The award, first presented last year, recognizes chambers for excellence in business advocacy and helping their members comply with California employment laws.

Northrop to Relocate 250 San Pedro Workers

Northrop Grumman Corp. plans to relocate all its roughly 250 employees in downtown San Pedro to other local areas by the end of the year. Northrop employs about 15,000 people in the South Bay, mostly in El Segundo, Redondo Beach.
